Coco 2 is in production as Disney confirms that the Pixar sequels will continue until morale improves

Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed Coco 2 during a recent call with shareholders less than a year after Inside Out 2 earned over a billion dollars at the box office for Pixar.

Last year was a big year for Pixar, which saw Inside Out 2 make over a billion dollars at the box office. Now they’re keeping the sequel spirit alive by working on a sequel to 2017’s Coco. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the sequel was in the early stages of production, with a 2029 release date looking likely for Coco 2.

During the annual Disney shareholder meeting, Iger revealed that the movie was in the early stages of development. “While [Coco 2] is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” Iger explained. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.” The news comes a year after Disney reportedly directed Pixar to focus on sequels for theatrical release rather than streaming to help them get back on track, which explains why the studio also has The Incredibles 3 in production alongside a Coco sequel.

Coco director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina are returning for the sequel, while Mark Nielson is producing after having produced multiple sequels at Pixar over the past several years.

Released in 2017, Coco followed a young boy named Miguel who, despite his family’s deep-seated and irrational hatred of music, dreams of becoming a musician. He travels to the Land of the Dead and uncovers the forgotten history of his family. While the movie wasn’t the biggest box office hit in Pixar’s history, it won two Oscars for Best Animated Feature and for Best Original Song (the heartbreaking “Remember Me”).
Coco 2 is currently slated for a 2029 release window.
