Before this The Crow remake, Jason Momoa almost starred in a remake - here's what happened

As one Crow remake comes to fruition, another recedes into twilight.

On August 23, 2024, a remake of The Crow will arrive in theaters starring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and FKA twigs as Shelly Webster, and directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman). Based on the comic created by James O’Barr (and the cult favorite 1994 film), this year's the Crow remake was previously something quite different - with someone quite differen: Jason Momoa.

However, the version of The Crow remake that arrives in theaters in August will not feature the first actor to be cast in the role for the movie. In fact, in addition to Game of Thrones and Aquaman star Jason Momoa, Hollywood stars Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans and Jack Huston were all also previously hired in the role.

Nevertheless, Momoa’s involvement garnered special attention from fans, thanks to the star’s high profile among movie and TV viewers. First mentioned in 2008, The Crow remakes was renamed The Crow Reborn when production shifted from one studio to another. In 2016, it was reported that director Corin Hardy and star Momoa had begun to collaborate on the project, set to film in 2017.

However, a month before production on The Crow Reborn began, both Hardy and Momoa exited the project. According to Hardy, irresolvable creative differences emerged between his vision and the rights holder for the property. And in an Instagram post, Momoa commented that he would readily return to the character in a future incarnation of the property: “James O’Barr I swear to you I won’t let you down on the next. This film needs to be free.”

However, when development on The Crow remake officially began in 2020, Momoa was no longer involved. After considering Alexander Skarsgård (The Stand) for the title role, Bill Skarsgård (IT) was cast in the role instead.

Will you be heading to theaters on August 23 to catch the new incarnation of The Crow? Be sure and let us know what you’re thinking in the comment section below.
