It’s a new era for the DC Universe, as Peter Safran and James Gunn’s new cinematic universe begins to take flight. DC Studios has plenty of exciting projects on the way, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Based on the fan favorite comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the film is set to be released in 2026.

Speaking to a crowd at New York City Comic Con, Gunn shared his excitement for the upcoming film. “Ana [Nogueira] and Craig [Gillespie], the writer and the director, have been doing a fantastic job of spearheading this. We start shooting in England in January. I just saw….I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this, but I’m going to say it anyway…I just saw the screentest for Ruthye with Milly Alcock, who is playing Supergirl, and I’m so excited. That’s another project that has just been blessed from the beginning.”

Gunn is referring to Ruthye Marye Knoll, a character from the original comic book storyline to be played in the movie by Eve Ridley, opposite Milly Alcock's Supergirl. Ruthye was a young woman who served as Supergirl’s companion and somewhat of a sidekick as they traveled through space.

Gunn went on to say that Ana Nogueira’s pitch was one of the greatest he had ever heard. “Ana came in and she pitched the story to me of Supergirl, and it was just one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard. She immediately wrote it, she came in with a first draft, that was great. And it’s just gotten better and better. Craig has been incredibly easy to work with. I can’t wait for that one to come out.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theater on June 26, 2026.
