Here are the Lex Luthor comics Nicholas Hoult read to prepare for James Gunn's Superman movie for DC Studios

MRC Television surprised Nicholas Hoult with a copy of Lex Luthor: A Celebration of 75 Years

When Nicholas Hoult was cast as Lex Luthor, he knew he had some homework to do. Luckily his friends at MRC Television had him covered.

MRC Television is the production company behind The Great, a Hulu streaming series starring Hoult. When MRC learned that James Gunn had cast him as the Superman villain, they gave Hoult a gift that anybody could appreciate – comics!

Speaking to a crowd at Megacon 2025, Hoult gave some insight on how he prepared for Gunn’s Superman. Hint – it involved reading lots of comics.  “Each character is different in how you mentally prepare. If you’ve got a lot of time, for me as a fan it’s beautiful because I can go back and read a lot of comics.”

“One of the first things I got sent after I was cast as Lex Luthor…it was actually really sweet, the production company who made The Great, MRC, sent me the 75 Years of Lex book, which has got all the comics, the first appearance of Lex, all of his history through the Bronze, Silver, and Gold era of comics. That was wonderful. It was very kind of them to share that with me. That was my homework and research for a couple of days, just sitting and reading comics…and then more comics.”

Hoult is referring to the Lex Luthor: A Celebration of 75 Years hardcover collection. I’ve read this collection, and it’s a great look at the various incarnations of Lex Luthor over the years. If this is what Hoult used to channel the character, then we’re in for one awesome movie.

Superman flies into theaters July 11, 2025
