"More than one" R-rated DCU film being considered for greenlight, says DC Studios boss James Gunn
"If a story is going to be R-rated, we're totally okay with that," said The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker director James Gunn. And if the co-president of the DCU says it, odds are its true

Get ready for a lot more adult content in your superhero fare, probably. DCU co-president James Gunn (director of R-rated DC adaptation The Suicide Squad) says that there are "more than one" projects at the studio that are up for examination by Warner Bros, and that those projects may receive an R-rating if they are given the greenlight. We've got the low-down on his comments right here.
The subject came up in a recent interview that Gunn did with Steve Weintraub at Collider, in which the Guardians of the Galaxy director rejected the idea that the studio was taking a a "see how it does" mentality in deciding whether or not to do R-rated DC films.
"It's not about testing out to see if this thing works," Gunn said, "It's just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we're totally okay with that. If it's going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don't care — whatever is worthy of the story, that's what we're going to do."
At the same time, the interviewer brought up the success of Marvel's R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine, which kind of counts as proof that audiences are ready for R-Rated comic book movies. "People love that format for that thing," Gunn agrees, which may be why Gunn chose that time to drop the "more than one" bomb on the interviewer.
Of course, the question on everyone's mind after hearing this is: just which upcoming DC movies will be getting the R-Rated treatment? An obvious guess might be a horror-leaning entry such as a Hellblazer adaptation, but then again, if Gunn is referencing Deadpool & Wolverine here, might that signal a move toward an R-rating of the high-octane, violent kind? Perhaps a balls-to-the-wall take on Harley Quinn, Deathstroke, or (dare we hope) Lobo?
Such is not for your humble friends at Popverse to say, but we will be keeping an eye out for the projects that Gunn is referencing here. No matter the rating, a new DC movie is big news around these parts, and we wouldn't get the news of one without sharing it with you.
