Writer and illustrator Simon Stålenhag looms large in today's sci-fi literary scene, and his book, The Electric State, has been adapted by directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The Russo Brothers, best known for directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, have teamed up with their former MCU collaborators, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote the screenplay for the adaptation. The adaptation is produced by Netflix.

Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, and Stanley Tucci, The Electric State movie will release on Netflix in March, 2025. An exact release date has not been confirmed yet by the streaming service. Given the high concept elements of Stålenhag's story, the visual effects of The Electric State are an important piece of the puzzle. The film's release date is thus dependent on post-production.

The Electric State is about a teenage girl who travels across the western United States with a robot as they search for her brother. Stålenhag's illustrations from the book blend the splendor of the Western United States with the ruinous look of abandoned robots that dot the landscape. The novel has a unique visual language that, if adapted well, could translate successfully onscreen.

The Electric State will release in March, 2025 on Netflix.
