A new Godzilla movie is in the works, but is it a Minus One sequel? One interview with director Takashi Yamazaki seems to say, "No"
We're just forecasting here, but it may be that Godzilla's trip to post-WWII Japan won't get a follow-up just yet - even though Takashi Yamazaki is back in the director's chair

Maybe you missed it because of Halloween, but Godzilla Day was November 3, and fans had every reason to celebrate. Announced via the official Godzilla Twitter/X account (and later reported by The Hollywood Reporter), a new Godzilla movie has been greenlit by Toho. And even better? Godzilla Minus One director/writer/VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki is on board as lead creative. Naturally, this has lead many to assume that the upcoming movie is a follow-up to last year's Oscar-winning Godzilla period piece, with even Forbes referring to the flick as a "Sequel." But is it?
One interview with Takashi Yamazaki might say otherwise.
That interview comes from February of this year, when Yamazaki was discussing Minus One's VFX with the good folks at Collider. During the exchange, the interviewer asked whether or not a sequel would be Yamazaki's next film, to which the director responded:
"Well, I can tell you it’s not going to be my next film. I already have my next film in development right now that I’m working on. But will it be the one after that? That remains to be seen…"
Sure, it's about as non-answery as an answer to get (and aren't we familiar with those, franchise fans?), but if you consider it alongside this weekend's announcement, a curious picture comes into focus. So far, the new Godzilla movie is the first and only officially announced next project coming from Yamazaki (except for a short film called Foodlosslla, which was already known about by the time of this interview). And if the "next film in development" the director mentioned in the interview is the new Godzilla movie, doesn't that also mean the new Godzilla movie is not a Minus One sequel?
As we said in the subhead, this observation is purely conjecture; we're going to have to wait on Toho for an official announcement. Could the new Godzilla movie be a Minus One sequel after all, or will it be a return to the kaiju vs. kaiju battles Toho does so well (and as Yamazaki has indicated he'd like to do)?
Like Godzilla himself, we know the answer will be here soon. And just like the King of Monsters, we expect it to cause a pretty huge wave.
