Leonardo DiCaprio & Martin Scorsese's next movie delves into the conceptions & misconceptions of American Christianity, based on one of Barack Obama's favorite books

Marilynne Robinson's Gilead series is getting the big screen treatment from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have made six films and one short movie together over the past 25 years, becoming one of the biggest modern actor/director combos in cinema - and, as part of that, have their own joint Wikipedia page, a shared production company (in addition to their individual ones), and share a talent agent. Now, they've picked out their next joint project.

The duo are working on a live-action adaptation of Marilynne Robinson's 2008 novel Home for Apple Original Films, with DiCaprio presumed to be one of the movie's stars, Scorsese directing, and both onboard as producers as well. Home follows an aging Midwest Presbyterian preacher whose two adult children return home to care for him in his dying years as family secrets and their tumultuous past are uncovered.

DiCaprio and Scorsese's movie is just part of a larger project, however, as Apple also plans to adapt Robinson's previous novel, Gilead, as well as two additional sequels into their own movies as well, through Scorcese and DiCaprio's production companies. The two aren't the only big names attached to the series; Tár writer/director Todd Field is collaborating with Scorsese on Home's screenplay, and has been mentioned as being a frontrunner to direct Gilead.

Robinson's Gilead series has been lauded since its debut in 2004 for its approach in portraying American Christianity, particular of the denominations associated with the Calvinism and Puritan movements, in contrast to the stereotypes that have developed over the years. Both Gilead and Home have been featured and republished as part of Oprah Winfrey's book club, and the former won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which is no small feat as well.

Gilead, the first book in the series, tells some of the events of Home from a different point of view; those books are then followed by Lila (2014) and Jack (2020), which concludes the series. Former US President Barack Obama has called the pastor of Gilead "one of my favorite characters in fiction," especially for the character's struggles in "how to reconcile his faith with all the various travails that his family goes through."

Home is one of two movies DiCaprio and Scorsese are working on, joining an adaptation of another prose novel, The Water by David Grann.
