Amazon boss on what it's going to do with James Bond: "We don't have a plan yet"

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says that "nobody's written the story" for whatever will happen to Britain's iconic super spy now that the company controls the character outright

After the surprise news that Amazon MGM is solely in charge of the James Bond franchise, many have wondered just what the corporate giant was planning for fiction’s greatest secret agent. The company has finally broken its silence to reveal… that it is actually wondering pretty much exactly the same thing.

Deadline notes that, according to a transcript of an upcoming CNBC interview, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in response to a question about the company’s plans for James Bond, “We don’t have a plan yet on what the next theme is going to be. We haven’t — nobody’s written the story yet.”

Jassy did add that Amazon is going to “take great care” of the Bond series moving forward. “It’s an amazing franchise that we care a lot about and that we expect to develop over a long period of time.”

On the one hand, it’s not too surprising that Amazon isn’t looking to break any big announcement in the middle of a new interview about another topic altogether — the interview was actually about additional AI features being added to virtual assistant Alexa; Jassy even joked, “I don’t believe that AI is going to write a Bond movie any time soon” in the interview — but on the other, am I the only person who is surprised that the answer was quite so honest about no plan being in place? Sure, it’s only been a week since the announcement was made that Amazon had taken over the property, but they haven’t been planning for this for awhile already? Really?

So much for rumors about Amazon having their replacement for Daniel Craig already lined up and a new movie immediately ready to go into pre-production. Maybe we should ask Alexa what she thinks about it all; I’ve heard she’s got some new features that might help her answer.
