One of the coolest (and yet, somewhat obscure) DC Comics characters is making his way into cinemas next year. And thanks to the just-released Superman trailer, we got our first glimpse at him. Yes, James Gunn's Superman trailer does indeed feature our first look at Barry star Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho (above).
It appears that Gunn, Safran & Co. are leaning into the monstrous aspect of Metamorpho's character, not only heavily doing up Carrigan's face in skin prosthetics, but emphasizing the material nature of his body, as you can see in the rock-lick growths on his shoulders in the screenshot above.
In case you don't know, Metamorpho's got a bit of a tragic origin in DC Comics. Rex Mason was an adventurer who was hired by a large company to retrieve an ancient artifact of great power. When the company's evil CEO grew distrustful of Mason, they exposed him to negative effects of the meteorite, giving him incredible powers but also stripping him of his humanity.
What's really interesting is that the name of that evil CEO, set down by DC Comics, is Simon Stagg. Now, take a look at this screenshot from the trailer...
Will Metamorpho's origin be a part of the overarching story in James Gunn's Superman? We'll have to wait until the movie coes out (or more trailers drop) to find out.
