John Hughes discussed a Breakfast Club sequel with Anthony Michael Hall and John Candy before he died

John Hughes had plans for a Breakfast Club sequel, catching up with the Shermer High kids as adults

In Hollywood the conventional wisdom is that successful movies get sequels. This isn’t a hard rule, but generally when a film is well received and makes money, the studio tries to get the director to come back for another installment.

However, not every movie needs a sequel. The Breakfast Club is a 1985 coming-of-age teen comedy that follows five teenagers during a Saturday detention session. The John Hughes film became a cultural touchstone and earned $51 million on a $1 million budget. There was no sequel, but there didn’t need to be. By the end of the film, Claire, Bender, Andrew, Brian, and Allison had broken out of their high school stereotypes and learned more about themselves, their classmates, and life.

Still, I can’t help but think that a sequel could’ve been interesting. It turns out that director John Hughes thought so as well. During a Breakfast Club spotlight panel at Megacon 2025, Anthony Michael Hall  (who played Brian in the film) spoke about a conversation he had with Hughes about a potential sequel.

“The last time I got to speak to John, it was about 1988, and he called me with John Candy on the phone, and we just hung out on the phone for a couple of hours talking, and I was so happy to hear from both of them. He did tell me at that time that he had it in his mind, he was playing with the idea of doing a sequel, and picking up on where they would be as adults, wherever that is. I think that was something that he was conjuring and thinking about.”

It's interesting that John Candy was on the phone call. I wonder if he would have been included in the film. After all, Candy was an actor that John Hughes loved to include in his movies.

John Hughes passed away in 2009, ending any talk of a Breakfast Club sequel. However, the film is still a strong standalone, and the perfect snapshot of teenage angst in the ‘80s.

The Breakfast Club cast will be reuniting in the movie's hometown of Chicago for April's C2E2. Here's details on how to meet them!
