Running from a Tyrannosaurus Rex is hard. Imagine doing it in heels. The 2015 film Jurassic World contained a memorable climactic battle between the Indominus Rex and the T-Rex. In order to get the T-Rex in the right spot, Bryce Dallas Howard’s character Claire Dearing had to lure the creature out of his pen, which involved running in heels.
Following the film’s release, there was a lot of talk about the decision to have Claire run in heels. Was it even possible? According to Bryce Dallas Howard – yes, as long as you have the right training.
Speaking to a crowd at Fan Expo Canada, Bryce Dallas Howard revealed the secrets of running in heels. “I knew that running in heels was going to be a beast. Even when I was doing all the costume fittings, I was like, ‘Don’t you think the character should have boots? She has like over-the-knee boots?’ And the costume designer was like, ‘No, no, no, she’ll be far too protected.’ I was like, ‘Exactly.’ But I think the costume designer was right. You didn’t want to foreshadow that this was a character who was going to be in peril. You wanted to be like, oh this is a character who if she leaves an office she’s going to die. That’s what you wanted to think with that.”
According to Howard, Claire didn’t have to run in heels. However, the alternative wasn’t appealing. “I knew it was going to be tricky. Colin [Trevorrow] said, ‘There’s going to come a point where you can kind of let go of your accoutrements, and if you want to, you can take off your heels and you can do the rest of the movie barefoot.’ And I was like, ‘We’re shooting in the jungle. I will take any footwear you give. I don’t want to be barefoot.’”
And thus, Howard began training for the chase scene. “I had these boards built that were a little slanted, and every single day they would be in the back of my car. Whenever I had a break, I would just get on the board, and I would be practicing calf exercises and balancing exercises. Basically, all that it is, is running on your tippy toes.”
“I was doing all these exercises, and nobody was complimenting me. No one was like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s incredible you’re running in heels.’ And then when the movie came out, I was like, ‘I know, wasn’t it?’ It was crazy, right guys?”
The moral of the story is, when you’re running from a dinosaur, training helps... and it probably isn’t the best time to be picky about footwear.
