Blumhouse's Spawn movie reboot with Todd McFarlane has got a new name

Todd McFarlane and Jason Blum have posted images of the screenplay on social media

Speculators start your engines; Todd McFarlane is turning Spawn comics into collectables once more. That's because McFarlane and film studio Blumhouse (who's working with Todd on a certain cinematic operation) have revealed the title of the upcoming Spawn reboot film. That title is King Spawn, a name you know well if you've been keeping up with Spawn history over at Image Comics.

The announcement showed up on both McFarlane's and Blumhouse's official Twitter accounts on July 22. In the identical posts, one can see the title page of the King Spawn script along with its now official title. Also listed on the post are screenwriters Scott Silver (who wrote 2019's Joker), Malcom Spellman (scribe of Marvel's Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and comic book movie newcomer Matt Mixon. See the post below.

One of a number of Spawn titles released as part of the Spawn's Universe initiative in 2021, King Spawn sees the titular character confronting an old nemesis while on the journey toward the Throne of Hell, forever shifting the balance of celestial and demonic forces and making one of the most powerful characters in independent comics even more so. The series has been running for some 36 issues as of this week, and with the recent title announcement, will likely only keep going.

What's unconfirmed by either McFarlane or Blumhouse is if King Spawn will follow the plot of the comic with which it shares a name. If you remember Popverse's reporting on the Spawn reboot in October of last year, you'll recall that Blumhouse head Jason Blum has said the film is "going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies." As a comic, King Spawn is certainly "edgy" and "original," but that's far from a confirmation of plot details.

Pretty much the only thing we can confirm, at this point, is that your first printing of King Spawn #1 just got the teensiest bit more valuable. Check eBay to see if we're right.
