I'm a simple man: I see an adorable little creature in an A24 film starring Willem Dafoe, I'm hooked. This is how The Legend of Ochi, the debut feature by music video director Isaiah Saxon, won me over in a matter of seconds. Saxon has received critical acclaim for his work on music videos for artists like Grizzly Bear and Björk. Based on the trailer for The Legend of Ochi, his foray into narrative film retains the sense of splendor and whimsy from his previous work.

The Legend of Ochi will be released theatrically by A24 on February 28, 2025. The film stars Helena Zengel in the lead role of Yuri, with Willem Dafoe playing her father. Finn Wolfhard and Emily Watson are also in the film. Those who enjoyed Saxon's music video work will be pleased to learn that David Longstreth of the iconic indie rock band, Dirty Projectors, composed the score for The Legend of Ochi. You can check out the trailer below:

The Legend of Ochi tells the story of a girl named Yuri who rescues a baby ochi creature from the forest outside her home. To return the baby ochi back to its family, Yuri must challenge everything she was taught by her community about the forest and land they live on. The film's cinematography is gorgeous, and it's refreshing to see a fantasy character brought to life in live-action through puppetry, rather than CGI. I'm looking forward to seeing Dafoe in another protective but whimsical father role after his performance in Yorgos Lanthimos's Poor Things. He never disappoints.

The Legend of Ochi will release in theaters on February 28, 2025.
