When you’re James Cameron, you make your own rules — whether it’s resetting expectations for action movies in the 1980s with movies like Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, or True Lies, or coming up with the most successful movie in box office history on multiple occasions, with Titanic and Avatar. What that means for fans at D23 Expo 2024 is that, while he’ll show up to promote the third Avatar movie, he’s not going to bring any clips with him.

That doesn’t mean that he arrived at the Honda Center empty-handed, however: he was willing to reveal that the title of the movie will be Avatar: Fire and Ash, and that it will feature “new cultures and settings” from the earlier movies in the series, as well as “high emotional stakes.” (Would we expect anything less?) “You’ll see more of Pandora the planet than you ever saw before,” he teased. “The new film isn’t what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.”

Cameron was joined onstage by Avatar stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthingfon, with the latter promising that they’ve “been hard at work at it” in order to get the movie ready for its release in theaters next year.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will arrive December 19, 2025.
