In my many years interviewing celebrities, I’ve tried to come up with interesting and thought-provoking questions. However, no matter how many years I do this, I will never come up with an interview question as iconic or memorable as: ‘Will you wear wigs?’

This question was asked during a 2004 interview with Elijah Wood. The entire thing was a prank, with Wood’s Lord of the Rings costar Dominic Monaghan using a fake voice to interview Wood over an audio feed. Monaghan asked Wood a series of weird and uncomfortable questions, and Wood answered, unaware that it was Monaghan doing a bit. This included a series of nonsensical questions about whether Wood wears wigs, plans to wear wigs, and when he plans on wearing them.

The interview was used as a special Easter egg for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Extended Edition DVD, but you can also find it on YouTube.

The moment became an early internet meme, and Wood has never lived it down. And thus, during The Lord of the Rings reunion panel at C2E2 2025 one of the fan submitted questions asked Wood if wears wigs. “I will,” Wood answers with a laugh.

“I showed my wife the video recently, and she had never seen the interview. I rewatched it for the first time in a long time, and I don’t know why I was so anti-wig. I was really resistant.”

Wood reveals that by that point of the interview, he had a feelings something was off, but he wasn’t sure what was happening. “I genuinely at that point knew I was in some sort of ruse. I didn’t know what the ruse was, but I don’t know why I wasn’t more amenable. I watched the video, and I’m like, ‘Dude, just say you wear wigs!’”

It’s good to know that Wood’s stance on wigs has changed, even if it took 20 years.
