Could Lord of the Rings’s Merry and Pippin survive on the island from Lost? Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd have some thoughts

What’s more dangerous, Middle-earth or the island from Lost? Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd reveal how Merry and Pippin would fare as castaways

Merry and Pippin have survived the dangers of Middle-earth, but how would they fare on the island from ABC's mysterybox classic Lost?

Speaking a crowd at The Lord of the Rings reunion panel at C2E2 2025, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who play the hobbit cousins in The Lord of the Rings franchise, made the case for why their characters would survive on the mysterious and supernatural island.

“I think they would. I think Mary and Pippin are quite sufficient between the two of them,” Monaghan said. “They can light fires, they can find food, they would do alright. I think they would keep out of all the trouble and the drama. They would just be in a different part of the island doing their thing.”

“You can be on the gate while I press the button. I open the gate, you press the button. Makes it easier,” Boyd said, referring to a ritual the castaways were forced to do in Lost season 2.

Monaghan is speaking from experience, since played castaway Charlie Pace on the drama. Of course, Charlie met his untimely end in the Lost season 3 finale. Who knows, maybe Merry and Pippin would’ve lasted longer. Their plan to stay out of the drama would certainly help.
