Marvel: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is officially dead, as is apparently the Kang storyline.

The next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just swapped out Kang for another big bad

Two years ago, Marvel Studios announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty during their Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.

A lot can happen in two years, and now plans have changed.

Kang’s actor Jonathan Majors was originally going to be a central figure for the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. However, the actor became the center of a series of controversies. In 2023 Majors was convicted of one count of reckless assault. Shortly thereafter, Marvel Studios removed Majors from all their future projects.

This meant restructuring their future plans, which included the 2026 film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The film unofficially became known as Avengers 5 until a new storyline could be worked out.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, we got a very big clue about what that new storyline will be. During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation, Kevin Feige surprised audiences by bringing out directors Anthony and Joe Russo. The Russo Brothers directed some of Marvel’s biggest hits, including Avengers: Endgame, and now they’ll be back for Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Speaking of Avengers 5, we finally learned what the new title is…Avengers: Doomsday.

Kang is no longer the big bad…now it’s Doctor Doom. As if that news wasn’t big enough, Doom will be played by none other than Robert Downey Jr., the actor who kicked off the MCU. This is a huge shift in Marvel’s future plans, but an exciting one.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to be released May 2026.
