Don't call them the Dark Avengers: Marvel's Sebastian Stan says the Thunderbolts are more like The Breakfast Club

And they said the Spider-Man movies were the John Hughes avatars of the MCU. Not according to Bucky Barnes

We're not making this up - that asterisk at the end of the MCU's Thunderbolts* has some fans speculating that, by the end of the movie, will actually be known as the Dark, or even Secret, Avengers. But according to one of the film's stars, the superhero team that somewhat parallel DC's Suicide Squad shouldn't be compared to any MCU team that's come before. Actually, according to Sebastian Stan, AKA Bucky Barnes, AKA Winter Soldier, a better comparison lies with none other than The Breakfast Club.

Speaking at the 2025 Golden Globes (where he scored the Best Actor in a Motion Picture award for his film A Different Man), Stan spoke to Entertainment Tonight about his most recent work and, because everyone is wondering about them, his future projects. It was then that Stan started talking Thunderbolts*, specifically commenting on why he thinks the film will stand out from other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries in the past.

"I think this movie is very singular and it will stand on its own," Stan said to the interviewer. "I know these are bold words, but there's no other Marvel group that you can compare us to. It's its own thing. I like The Breakfast Club - that's the best way of describing it. A [group] of misfits that hopefully don't kill each other."

Bold words they are, Sebastian, but not entirely boastful. Stan goes on to credit the movie's difference to his costars, saying "Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Julia Louis Dreyfus aresome of the funniest people I've ever been around," and even credits Marvel Studios as a whole. "What I appreciate [about Marvel] is there's always an open way of thinking. They don't shut themselves down or put themselves in any pocket. They just want to keep exploring, and that's what I think leads to great, better movies."

It's very nice sentiment from a Golden Globe-winner, and now that we've heard it, we can move on to what's really important: which Breakfast Club role is each of the Thunderbolts*? Valentina's probably the brain and I suppose John Walker is the athlete, but who's basket case? Who's the criminal? My money's on Red Guardian as the princess, but what do I know?

Thunderbolts* comes to theaters May 2, 2025.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans - the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. As Popverse's Staff Writer, he criss-crosses the pop culture landscape bringing you the news and opinions about the big things (and the next big things). In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
