Mission: Impossible exhibit in New York sets out to celebrate Tom Cruise, stunts, and Mission: Impossible (in that order)

April's Story and Spectacle exhibit at the Museum of the Moving Image takes stock of everything that's made the M:I movie franchise a success ahead of the release of what might be its final installment

Mission: Impossible fans in New York City, your mission — should you choose to accept it — is to celebrate everything producer and star Tom Cruise has brought to the M:I franchise in person this April, via the Museum of the Moving Image’s upcoming Mission: Impossible - Story and Spectacle exhibition.

Opening April 18, ahead of May’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning release, the exhibit will “spotlight star and producer Tom Cruise’s exceptional commitment to practical stunt work, and explore how the series combines technical ingenuity, personal discipline, and artistic commitment, all in service of storytelling, character development, and performance,” according to the Museum. Each movie in the series will receive its own section of the exhibition, focusing on the key action sequence in each installment featuring what the museum is describing as “unique behind-the-scenes content that offers insight on how the remarkable stunts were prepared for and filmed.”

In a statement about the exhibition released to Variety, deputy director for curatorial affairs Barbara Miller said, “For almost 30 years, ‘Mission: Impossible’ films have thrilled audiences with suspenseful stories and unparalleled practical stunts. MoMI is excited to partner with Paramount Pictures on this major exhibition to explore the series’ unique achievements and create a fun, illuminating experience for fans and visitors.”

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, meanwhile, is set to appear in theaters May 23. As the title suggests, it’s rumored to be the last film in the series, although we’ve certainly heard that before. Tom Cruise is only 62 years old, surely he can continue to do life-threatening stunts for another couple of movies at least, right…?
