There are, reportedly, several live-action anime adaptations in the works at various studios, but, aside from Netflix’s One Piece series, it looks like Naruto might be the one furthest along in production. While other series like My Hero Academia and One Punch Man have been a bit slower to get off the mark, Naruto has managed to secure itself a director, though it still seems like a long way away from completion.

The Naruto live-action adaptation has been in development for almost a decade without getting as far as casting for any of its lead roles. However, the project hasn’t been officially shelved yet, with new news popping up every few months to remind us that it is still slowly moving forward.

Who is the live-action Naruto movie director?

Talks about a live-action Naruto movie have been going for nearly a decade, with Lionsgate confirming that they were developing the film back in 2015. Originally, it was going to be directed by Michael Gracey before he would go on to direct The Greatest Showman. However, Gracey exited the project and was replaced by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director, Destin Daniel Cretton, in early 2024.

Who is in the live-action Naruto cast?

Because the film has been in development for so long, you’d expect there to be some news about who was playing its lead. However, since Cretton took over as director and writer, the movie has effectively restarted, with Cretton retooling the first script written by Tasha Huo. That means that we still don’t know who is playing Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, or Kakashi in the live-action version of the characters.

When is the live-action Naruto movie release date?

With the change in director in early 2024 and a new script being worked on, we’re still no closer to getting the movie on our screens. There is no release date for the Naruto live-action movie. At this point, we can’t even speculate on when the movie might be released. It is better to just wait and be pleasantly surprised when the next batch of news comes out.
