Nosferatu or Santa Claus? New trailer proves Robert Eggers's new vampire film is guaranteed to become a Christmas staple

"He sees you when you're sleeping" means something very different in he latest trailer for Robert Eggers's Nosferatu, but we can't help but see why Focus Features chose a Christmas release date for the film

Hot rodent man summer is over; Nosferatu Christmas approaches. At least, that's the general message we get from the latest trailer for Robert Eggers's remake of the classic vampire tale. As odd as it may seem, we actually get some extremely twisted Yuletide vibes from the trailer, makes us of the opinion that a lasting holiday legacy awaits the Bill Skarsgård-starring scarefest. We'll explain in a sec, but first, take a look for yourself:

Right off the bat (heh), there are some parallels between Skarsgård's Count Orlok and Santa Claus himself - both are born of Germanic folklore, both travel inexplicably by night, and both seem to have a power to sense the inherent morality in a person. But beyond the Clausferatu thing, the movie's also set squarely in the dead of winter, and at a time period that works just as well for The Nutcracker as it does the infamous Dracula ripoff.

Don't get us wrong, we're not saying that Robert Eggers's Nosferatu is another Krampus, but we can't help but feel like this will stick with the Christmas-movie-going crowd. Especially the type that are more "scary ghost stories" than they are "tales of the glories" when it comes to Winter Tidings. But hey, maybe we're missing the mark altogether - Nosferatu might not find its festive spirit until it hits streaming a few months later, round about Valentine's Day by our estimation.

Cupid's kind of a folkloric monster too, if you think about it. Maybe worse than Orlok himself.

Nosferatu hits theaters December 25. Because of course it does.
