On January 14, UK tabloid The Sun published a story claiming that the 2025 Oscars were "on verge of being cancelled." According to the story, which went viral with the help of The Drudge Report, The Academy's leadership covertly planned "major changes to ceremony after LA wildfires," cancelling the March 3 event in secret. The only problem with this explosive story? It's not true.
Moreover, the 2025 Oscars have always been scheduled for March 2.
The morning after the story was published, The Hollywood Reporter took the time to debunk the tabloid's wild story, speaking with The Academy's senior leadership to get the facts straight. And though THR did not speak directly with the A-listers the Sun article cites as being part of an Academy Award oversight committee (Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg, to be specific), they spoke to individuals close to the stars, who concurred with senior leadership.
Moreover, no such Academy Awards oversight committee consisting of those people exists.
To be entirely fair, the LA wildfires have indeed had their impact on the Oscars this year (and far more importantly, the lives and livelihoods of many LA residents). As reported by Variety, the initial end date for Oscars voting was moved from January 14 to January 23 as a result of the ongoing crisis. However, neither The Academy or its broadcasting partner network ABC have had conversations about moving the date of the actual Oscars ceremony, and certainly not about cancelling it altogether.
While we're at it, in the near century that the Oscar ceremonies have been going on, there has never once been a cancellation. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, as THR points out, the Oscars were "postponed" and "pared-down," but still went ahead and were televised.
So, to clarify one more time: the 2025 Oscars will be televised on ABC, March 2, at 7pm EST.
