Few directors have had success like Quentin Tarantino. His library includes multiple, genre-breaking hits that have spawned iconic lines and shaped the entire personalities of generations of college students. Yet it feels like it has been forever since we heard from him as he’s taken a long break from directing. However, a recent interview gives some insight into why he’s been quiet and, more importantly, when we can expect to see his final film go into production.

The main reason why Tarantino hasn’t been working as of late is he’s been focusing on being a dad. “I’m in no hurry to jump into production right now,” he said at the Sundance Film Festival 2025. “I’ve been doing that for 30 years. I kinda want to not end up doing whatever movie I end up doing until my son is six.”

Tarantino’s son was born in 2020, so this suggests that he will begin making his next movie in 2026. However, this doesn’t feel like a set deadline from the Pulp Fiction director – more of a timeline for the earliest he could start working on his next movie. We wouldn’t be surprised if the wait was even longer considering that he intends his next movie to be his last. With his legacy as a filmmaker on the line, it feels likely that he’ll give himself time to find the right story at the right time for his next film.

In the meantime, Quentin Tarantino says he is working on a play. “If that’s a smash hit, that might be my last movie.”
