Red Sonja's movie reboot lands US distributor, meaning the former Conan co-star and current She-Devil with a Sword might be back on the big screen in the next few months

Since her debut in 1973, readers have seen fantasy heroine (and former Conan the Barbarian co-star) Red Sonja take on all kinds of challenges. Kings, monsters, gods, the so-called She-Devil with a Sword has sliced her way through them all. And now, Red Sonja is set up to hack her way though what might be her most difficult challenge yet: the US box office.
According to reports, the new Red Sonja film has found it’s distributor in Samuel Goldwyn Films.
The news comes from Deadline, who had the exclusive on Red Sonja’s latest update March 26. Starring as the titular warrior in this particular adventure is Matilda Lutz (who starred in The Substance director Coralie Fargeat's 2017 thriller Revenge), with a screenplay (based on the Red Sonja comics, not the Bridgitte Nielsen/Arnold Schwarzenegger movie from ‘85) written by Tasha Hugo and direction from Ash vs. Evil Dead’s M.J. Bassett.
SGF is reportedly looking at a late 2025 release for the film.
"We’re thrilled to be bringing Red Sonja to audiences across the nation," said Peter Goldwyn, president of the distributor. "The fanbase for the legendary character is big and passionate and we’re confident that this film will deliver for them.”
He's right - Red Sonja fans (many of whom came to the character via Gail Simone's legendary comic run) have followed her exploits for decades. And yet, Red Sonja is entering relatively new territory here - after all, the film landscape today looks very different than it did 40 years ago. Will Red Sonja diehards show up in numbers to rival titans like the MCU or Star Wars fanbase?
Or will Red Sonja have finally met her match?
