Rocky Horror Picture Show is about thier "loss of innocence" explains co-star Barry Bostwick

“By the end of the movie they’ve lost their innocence in some way”: Barry Bostwick breaks down Rocky Horror’s central theme

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the story of a boy, a girl, and some sexually charged aliens. It’s a love story. It’s a musical. It’s a sexual awakening. The 1975 cult classic is many things, depending on who you ask. In fact, one particular cast member has an interesting take on what the rock musical is ultimately about.

During a spotlight panel at GalaxyCon Columbus 2024, Rocky Horror star Barry Bostwick spoke about what he felt the film’s overall theme was. “It’s a real story about real people who are involved in really weird things, but it’s all about the loss of innocence. Everybody in it, by the end of the movie they’ve lost their innocence in some way, whether it’s Rocky, or it’s Janet, or it’s Brad, or the brother and sister who are doing elbow sex.”

Bostwick also sang the praises of Jim Sharman, the film’s director. “Jim Sharman was so smart because he knew the tone of this movie. It had to be a little larger than life, but not cartoony. I thought that was a really hard balance, and I think he really did it well.”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show turns 50 this year, and fans are still talking about it. It may have taken our innocence, but it was worth it all just to dance the Time Warp.
