Five Night at Freddy's Matthew Lillard makes a surprise return from the grave for Scream 7 role

Matthew Lillard is coming back to the Scream series for 2026's Scream 7... despite Stu Macher dying in the first movie. (Or did he?)

Something very strange is going on with Scream 7. A day after it was announced that Scott Foley will be returning for Ghostface’s seventh outing even though his character died back in the third installment in the series, we’re hearing that Matthew Lillard is also coming back for the movie — but his character died in the first Scream, way back in 1996.

To be fair, Lillard has been fairly vocal in sharing his theories that Stu Macher didn’t actually die back in the original Scream in recent years — it was part of the wonderfully chaotic Scream reunion panel from Emerald City Comic Con 2023, which you can (and should!) watch right here — but there’s something to be said about the fact that the next movie in the series is seemingly bringing back two characters from the dead for whatever reason. (The casting was originally revealed by Deadline.)

It should also be noted that Foley and Lillard’s characters share another bond in the franchise beyond both being dead; they were both Ghostface in different movies. (The third and first episodes, respectively.) Is this a sign that something very unexpected — and, honestly, un-Scream-like — is happening in the new movie? Of course, the franchise has some history in bringing back a dead Ghostface; Skeet Ulrich, who played Billy Loomis — the other Ghostface in the first Scream — came back in 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI as a ghost and/or figment of another character’s imagination. So perhaps we’re headed in that direction this time around.

Scream 7 is being directed by original franchise co-creator Kevin Williamson, and stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mckenna Grace and Joel McHale. The movie is set to reach theaters February 27, 2026. Before then, we'll get to see Lillard return in an entirely different horror franchise — he'll be part of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, released December 5, 2025.
