MCU fans can all agree that Phase 4 has had its highs and lows. Now we’ve had a small update on one of the bright spots of that particular string of films: Shang-Chi 2 is still very much in production, according to Simu Liu himself. Unfortunately, the actor was decidedly short on more details.
It speaks to the popularity of the film that Simu Liu was asked about the status of the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings while he was out on the press tour for his latest movie, Jackpot. “A lot of it is above my pay grade, but it’s definitely happening. So, [I’m] just very excited to kind of work on it and it’s going to be amazing. I really can’t say anything beyond that.”
This is good news and not necessarily surprising; Shang-Chi was easily one of the best Marvel movies released during the MCU’s Phase 4 and the continued work on its sequel is encouraging – even if there isn’t much of an update to share beyond “it exists”. The news isn’t quite so good for Eternals; the sequel that was set up at the end of that film has apparently been shelved. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has confirmed that there are “no immediate plans for Eternals 2” as of July 2024.
We’re still waiting for any further updates about the Shang-Chi sequel, but at least it didn’t get sucked into the box office black hole that Eternals created in the MCU. If Simu Liu’s comments are correct, things are just progressing a bit slower than we’d like.
