You may recall Popverse's reporting on a rumored new Shrek in November of last year, or a month later, when we covered Cameron Diaz's return to the spotlight a month later. And now, we can officially confirm thanks to a Dreamworks annoucnement - Shrek 5 is coming to theaters.
The news came directly from the source on July 9, when Dreamworks Animation posted a short video to their Twitter/X account, set (of course) to the Smash Mouth song, All Star. Though the video is pretty barebones - it only shows the number 5 with SHrek ears (wait, are those his ears?) - it does feature two incredibly exciting detaisl that fans will be thrilled to hear.
First, there's the credits aboce the video - the trio of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are returning to voice Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey respectively. And second, there's a release date, a suprising detail this far away from the movie's debut. That release date is July 1, 2026, just a little under two years from the day the announcement was made.
"Not too Far, Far Away..." reads the text above the animated segment. Well, we don't know if that's ecatly true (two years is a pretty substantial wait), but at least there's something very exciting to wait for.
And, at least we look pretty darn smart.
Shrek 5 hits theaters July 1, 2026. In the meantime, check out Popverse's Shrek watch guide.
