Disney's new Snow White says the 1937 Prince Charming "literally stalks" the titular character

According to the film's star, this Snow White will feature a very different Prince Charming. And according to official descriptions, this one will have... well, an actual name

The source material for the upcoming Snow White live-action remake is verging on a century old, and as you can imagine, telling that story for modern times takes some reconstructing. Even before the film was completed, Disney's new Snow White was very up front about that fact, particularly in regards to how the movie handles the character of Prince Charming, the cartoon's slightly Pillsbury Doughboy-esque love interest that, 88 years later, still is technically without a real name.

Well, Disney fans, the "Prince" that falls for Snow White does have a name this go-round, and a significantly modified role. We'll explain.

Snow White stars West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler, who spoke to Extra about her role in the film all the way back in 2022. Touching on the subject of how the story would be retooled for modern audiences, Zegler said:

"The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so. There is a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird. So we didn't do that this time."

Naturally, this led the interviewer to enquire whether or not there would be a Prince at all in the film.

"We have a different kind of approach to what a lot of people will assume is a love story," Zegler explained, "Just because we cast a guy in the movie."

That guy, by the way, is Under the Banner of Heaven actor Andrew Burnap, who plays a role modeled on the original Prince of 1937, and who's name in the new movie is... ready for it?... Jonathan.

Well there you go. 88 years for "Jonathan."

Still on the subject of Snow White's love story, Zegler continued by saying: "Everyone is going to have those assumptions about what it's going to be, but it's really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful. Whether or not she finds love along the way is anyone's guess until [the film's release]. All of Andrew's scenes could get cut; who knows? It's Hollywood, baby."

"[The movie]," she tells her interviewer, "is an inner journey to go on to find her true self. And she meets a lot of people along the way that make the journey really incredible."

Two years later, that bit about Burnap getting cut is clearly a joke, as the character has been featured in multiple trailers and does seem to be set up as a love interest to the titular heroine, though whether or not the pair ultimately end up together is not yet known. Even still, Snow White's romance with Jonathan (Jonathan) is not the point of the movie, as Zegler explained in a March 18 interview with Allure.

"Snow White is on her own mission and she falls in love along the way," Zegler sayd, "which is really awesome. That’s how life happens. You’re never looking for it, and then all of a sudden, it’s there.

"You can have it all," she concludes, speaking about both romance and personal fulfillment. "It’s all possible. Because you are everything you’ve been wishing and waiting for."

Snow White comes to theaters March 22, 2025.
