Sonic the Hedgehog 3: The wild, expensive demand Jim Carrey had to return as Dr. Robotnik (that Paramount agreed to)
Sonic the Hedgehog might have incredible speed, Dr. Robotnik may have a knack for evil inventions, but as movie 3 drops December 20, Paramount reminds you that the world's real superpower is money
Popverse's top stories of the day
- Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in the new Star Wars movie developed by Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy

- The MCU needs Anya Taylor-Joy's Magik in it (and not just for the X-Men connection)
Ever wonder how the sinister Dr. Robotnik affords all the tech that he uses to challenge Sonic the Hedgehog? Well, now we know. Robotnik, or rather, Jim Carrey, the actor that plays him, can make some pretty expensive demands of Paramount Pictures, and according to a recent interview with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler, those demands are met. The director recently revealed that, in order to get Carrey back for the third film, he had to give him a script literally printed in gold.
Yes, "a script written in gold ink by angels," was something Carrey asked for before confirming his return in Sonic 3, though as he told the Associated Press (reported by CNN), "That might have been hyperbole." Hyperbole or no, it's exactly what Carrey got (presumably minus the "angels" part, although you never know with Paramount), as confirmed by Fowler in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter.
"I did," Fowler said when asked whether he really delivered a script printed in gold, "and it’s now worth about a hundred thousand dollars, so, hopefully, Jim has got it locked up somewhere."
If you're any kind of Hollywood collector, you probably know there's something of a market for rare movie scripts, typically because they're signed by a particularly famous actor or director. If you're not familiar, pay attention to a widely-publicized pop culture auction or two and you'll see what we mean. But now, thanks to Carrey, Fowler, and the budgeteers over at Paramount, the "valuable scripts" game might've just landed its final boss - if it's worth $100K now, just imagine what it will be in a few years.
Enough to pay for an absolute glut of robots, that's for sure.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with gold-plated script, is in theaters now.
