Star Wars’ John Boyega recalls his favorite Attack the Block memories ahead of new sequel

Attack the Block director Joe Cornish gave John Boyega a motorcycle, but said he was on his own when it came to motorcycle lessons

Before John Boyega was the Resistance hero Finn, he was a neighborhood hero named Moses.

Attack the Block was Boyega’s breakout role, and the 2011 film was arguably responsible for him being cast in Star Wars.(That and Tom Cruise.)

When asked about his favorite memories from the film, Boyega says it was learning to ride his motorcycle alongside his castmates.

“Riding into work with the boys,” Boyega recalls during his Popverse-hosted spotlight panel on the Emerald City Comic Con 2025 Main Stage powered by Xfinity. “We needed to train on the bikes, and Joe [Cornish], our director, was really extreme. So, we were like, ‘Oh, Joe. We need training for us to ride as a convoy and look like a group.’ And he goes, ‘Well, I’ll send you the bikes, but I’m not going to send you the training. You just ride to work every day. You’ll get it right.’”

As a result Boyega and his castmates had to learn on the job, which was part of the fun. While something like this is unheard of for big blockbusters, Boyega reminds us that Attack the Block was different. “We were very low budget. We didn’t have all the money for all those Marvel level training. You come in, and you come in and do it. Just having that time to come in and enjoy my persona life with my castmates, while also learning new skills, and being introduced to this industry, this amazing fandom, I think that was an amazing time in my life for real.”
