John Boyega has a special message for young Star Wars fans: you are unique, and your superpower is your power of choice
John Boyega says that Star Wars’s Finn teaches us that we can be whoever we want, regardless of where we came from.

Whether he realizes it or not, John Boyega is a hero in the eyes of millions of kids. His role as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy resonated with young viewers. Young children of color saw themselves in the character, gravitating to his story arc of finding independence from the First Order.
Boyega was surprised to learn how much kids loved Finn. “During the time, I wasn’t quite sure that would be the case,” Boyega admits. “As I’ve met kids at the airport, in McDonald’s, as I meet kids, the main thing that they say is the difference. Being part of an organization as big as the stormtroopers, and you being singled out for something greater.”
“A lot of that appeals to them, because they’re at the stage where they’re dreaming, they’re looking at mom and dad, and aspiring to what they want, and what they want to be. I guess Finn represents you’ve got to take your first step, and you have the power to make your choices, regardless of where you come from, and what you belong to. I love that.”
