John Boyega wasn’t a fan of all the choices made in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, calling the film “whack”
“That was whack”: John Boyega feels Star Wars: The Last Jedi should have had a more consistent plan

There’s no denying that Star Wars: The Last Jedi took some big swings. However, John Boyega, who played Finn in the film, isn’t sure all the swings paid off. Speaking to a crowd at the John Boyega: The Force of Talent panel at C2E2 2025, Boyega opened up about his feelings on the 2017 film.
“Last Jedi, they tried to do what they could with that,” Boyega mused. “But, I love Star Wars a lot. So, in planning the narrative, I would always assume that there would be a plan from the very beginning, much like what Kevin Feige has done with Marvel, and developing and spreading out those universes.”
While Boyega wasn’t specific about his grievances, he indicated that he wasn’t a fan of some of the movie’s creative choices.
“In The Last Jedi, I was a bit against some of the choices creatively, which I have spoken about, not to get into it, but I didn’t agree with. That was just as a nerd.”
However, Boyega holds no ill will towards Rian Johnson or Lucasfilm. In his eyes, it’s all part of the fun that comes with participating in a beloved franchise.
“I feel like a lot of us are into anime, or into movies, and we can go back and forth with our friends that are fans of the same thing. It doesn’t mean I’m going to detach from the IP, it just means that was whack. I feel like every fan should have the opportunity to do that, as long as it’s not using it against another person.”
