Knock out! Street Fighter movie from Legendary Pictures pulled from upcoming film release calendar

The original Street Fighter movie remains the best for now, though that is admittedly a low bar.

It can be hard to follow up on a great movie, even when it is decades old. Even Legendary, who are known for giving just about anything a go, have seemingly pulled the plug on their Street Fighter movie, pulling it from their release calendar entirely. The movie, which will undoubtedly be compared to 1994’s Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, is now in danger of never even entering production.

We know it can be tough to compete with a cinematic masterpiece like Street Fighter, but the news that Legendary is pulling their planned Street Fighter live-action movie from their release schedule shows that it is further behind schedule than we thought. It had been down for a March 20, 2026 release date. Currently, there aren’t any further details about the movie, including any information about the plot, cast, writer, or director, so the studio may have struggled to find anyone who is the right fit for the iconic game series.

Capcom, the developer who launched the game franchise back in 1987, is expected to co-produce the Street Fighter movie, just like they did with the original 1994 movie. That adaptation remains one of the most fun video game adaptations in history even if it probably won’t win many votes for being the “best”. The new Street Fighter movie, if it does eventually get made, probably won’t emulate the cheesiness of the original, much to our collective disappointment.

Legendary didn’t give a reason for pulling Street Fighter from their release schedule or any indication about if it was still moving forward. It is possible that Capcom, who famously got very involved with the original movie to the point of causing some production problems, isn’t happy with the direction Legendary is trying to take the movie. They reportedly earn "tens of millions of yen" each year off the original movie thanks to its cult status and streaming rights. A new movie might be immediately profitable but could tarnish the original's popularity and mean Capcom loses over $100,000 a year off a movie they made 30 years ago. It has become something of a golden goose for the company.
