Just as Superman masquerades in the real world as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet, the very story of Superman is also one with a secret identity. Sure, he’s the Last Son of Krypton and a Strange Visitor from Another Planet, and a superhero who can fly into the air and save the day and all of those wonderful things… but, if you take off the glasses for a second, you see something else very important about the whole deal: Superman is actually a love story… and the teaser trailer for James Gunn’s 2025 cinematic reboot of the character makes that very clear.

It’s one thing for audiences to expect to see Lois Lane in a trailer for a Superman movie; she’s enough of an integral character to the mythos of the Superman story that everyone expects to see her. The teaser trailer doesn’t just give us a Lois looking nervously at a fight, or some unfolding disaster, however — we do get to see her in the Daily Planet newsroom looking at screens, so there’s that, for those who want it — but instead, we get three separate glimpses of intimacy between the two — including two separate kisses, just to underscore the importance of the romance to the movie.

On the one hand, it’s another sign that this new Superman movie is a break from tradition when it comes to cinematic trends and delivering a softer superhero; on the other, it’s almost something bolder when confronting what audiences expect from their comic book fare: what if Superman is the first outright superhero romance that we’ve seen hit screens in decades?

If so, it’ll be a refreshing change after a long, long period of watching heroes surrender their social lives for the greater good and the value of never-ending angst. (I’m looking at you in particular, Spider-Man.) But how will Marvel respond? The ball might be in your court, The Fantastic Four: First Steps…
