Superman: James Gunn's first DC Universe movie gets a trailer release date

The first official footage of David Corenswet playing Superman in the 2025 James Gunn-directed film of the same name drops December 19 at 9 AM EST

Look up.

Very, very soon, we're going to get our first look at James Gunn's Superman, and by extension, the live-action side of the DC Universe. As confirmed by an official Warner Bros. teaser, the first Superman trailer drops December 19 at 9 AM EST, 6 AM PT. Watch the teaser right here:

There's not much to be said about the teaser - it's a simple animation of a rotating House of El symbol, on a kind of material that we wouldn't be surprised to see on the outside of the Fortress of Solitude. Speaking of Superman's arctic keep; is that icy winds in the background, or just the sounds of cape-flapping winds in the wild blue yonder? There's no way of knowing just now.

The only other piece of info Warner Bros. has keyed us into at this point is a brand new, triumphantly Christopher Reeve-coded poster for the 2025 movie, which is posted at the bottom of this article. Featuring David Corenswet as Superman in flight, the poster invokes a sense of hope, and to the longtime DC Comics-reader, a classic interpretation of the Man of Steel.

Now, let's take a step back: technically, this trailer won't be our first look at the James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Universe. That's what we got from Max's Creature Commandos, the next episode of which drops on the same day as the trailer. However, it is the first glimpse we got at official footage from a live-action DC Universe film and, perhaps more importantly, it's the first footage of a DCU project we'll see in theaters, as opposed to streaming.

And since we're on the subject of cinematic universes, we have to imagine that the gang over at Marvel Studios is wondering what to do after this trailer drops. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will go toe-to-toe with the DCU's first in-theater project, releasing just two weeks after Superman. Will this widely-watched teaser get the FF trailer fast-tracked onto our screens? We'll just have to wait and see.

Superman soars into theaters July 11, 2025.
