When the world calls out for Superman, Superman calls out for Krypto

The first teaser for James Gunn's Superman puts Krypto front-and-center, and we're not crying, you're crying, shut up

The Superman trailer is full of the kind of heroes you're not going to see in the real world. Supergeniuses, Thanagarians, Guardians of the Galaxy - er, the Green Lantern kind - are all over the place in the exciting footage that dropped December 19. But at the very beginning of the trailer, we see a kind of hero that's with us every single day. I'm talking, of course, about Superman's own pup and companion superhero, Krypto the Superdog.

Granted, Krypto isn't exactly a dog you might in the real world, in fact, he comes from the planet Krypton, just as Superman does. In DC Comics past, we've seen Krypto exhibit similar powers as his Metropolian owner, Clark Kent, albeit to a cuter degree. James Gunn & Co. seem to be a fan of those comics, as not only does he begin the trailer with the dog, but has featured him in previously released promos for the film, one of which is pictured below.

Your friend and mine Graeme McMillan recently wrote about how there's going to be a distinctly human side to the Superman that's coming to theaters next year. If you ask me, there's no better example of Superman understanding humanity than the way he exemplifies a truth I've come to rely on in my own life.

That is, when you need a hero, you call your dog.

Superman and his best pal Krypto (sorry Jimmy Olsen) fly into theaters July 11, 2025.

James Gunn's Superman is flying into theaters soon enough, and Popverse has all you need to prepare.
