Terrifier 4 will explore Art the Clown’s past, but its star David Howard Thornton hopes his origin stays ambiguous
David Howard Thornton thinks Art the Clown’s past should remain a mystery

Art the Clown has been terrorizing humanity since his debut in the 2008 short film The 9th Circle. However, despite appearing in multiple shorts and feature length films, we still know very little about Art the Clown’s past. The star of the Terrifier franchise is largely a blank slate. However, we might be getting our answers soon.
Speaking to a crowd at Nightmare Weekend Richmond, Art the Clown actor David Howard Thornton gave his thoughts on how Art’s past should be handled. “Damien [Leone] keeps a lot of things close to his vest, so I don’t know how accurate some of these things are. I know certain things about Art, and I don’t want to go into fan theories, because some have been close, and some have been way off, and stuff like that.”
Thorton hopes that Art’s origin will take inspiration from the Joker, another murderous clown. “I always love seeing the fan theories, but I kind of want to approach Art’s origin as kind of a little bit like the Joker. I hate to keep going back to him, but the whole you know who he was when he was Red Hood and he fell into the vat of chemicals, but you don’t necessarily know he was before he was the Red Hood. I kind of like that idea, and maybe we can take that approach to Art’s origin.”
Thorton then revealed that Terrifier 4 might give us some answers. “We might show how he became Art the Clown or something like that, but it’s up to Damien. That man, I trust. He comes up with some wicked crazy ideas, and I’m interested to see what he’s going to come up with. He’s told me a few things he’s got planned for Part IV, because I know we are going to start to go into a little bit more of his origins, because I think people have been patient enough. I think people are finally like, ‘You’ve got to tell us what’s going on with this guy.’ We’re going to finally start answering those questions.”
While Terrifier 4 has been announced, there is currently no release date for the sequel. There was a two year wait between Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, so if the next film has a similar timeline, then we’ll learn more about Art’s past sometime in 2026. That’s kind of fitting, since it will be the 10 year anniversary of the first Terrifier film.
