The Breakfast Club doesn't have the kind of high concept that would be greenlit today, says star Emilio Estevez
Emilio Estevez says Hollywood doesn’t make character driven movies like The Breakfast Club anymore

Chicago's C2E2 2025 was three days of comics, community, celebrities, and pizza (Pequod's, if you want to know). Read our full recap of the weekend, watch all of the Main Stage panel videos, see all the best cosplay photos, and more. And if you want to do it all again next year, we've got the dates for C2E2 2026, too.
It’s been 40 years since The Breakfast Club hit theaters, and we’re still celebrating the film today. Perhaps it’s because the movie has a lot of heart, a great cast, and a timeless story. However, another reason might be because Hollywood just doesn’t make films like that anymore. One Breakfast Club cast member believes that if the film was pitched today, Hollywood would reject it.
“Movies today are concept driven,” Emilio Estevez said during the Don’t You Forget About Me: The Breakfast Club 40th Anniversary Reunion panel at C2E2 2025. “They’re not character driven, and the beauty of John [Hughes} is that he focused on characters. When you think about trying to pitch this movie today, it’s about five kids sitting in a library all day in detention.”

“The studio executives would march you right out the door, saying where are the monsters, where are the car chases, where are the big effects. It’s also important to remember that we made this movie for $1 million, which at the time was still a lot of money, but by Universal standards it was not. It was not thought of as a big giant tentpole film as they make today. There was a lot of risk involved, but by today’s standards, this movie would I don’t think ever get made.”
