Breakfast Club's Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson talk 1980s movie poster shots we didn't see - including ones featuring writer/director John Hughes

When it comes to movie posters, it doesn’t get more iconic than The Breakfast Club. Who can ever forget Annie Leibovitz’s iconic shot of John Hughes’s iconic Brat Pack looking mean, moody, and magnificent?
The influential movie poster has been homaged many times, including a notable tribute from Sony Pictures for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
It turns out the iconic poster almost looked different. In fact, it nearly included the director. “There were more that they shot,” Judd Nelson said at the Breakfast Club reunion panel at C2E2 2025. “There were some by the lockers,” Molly Ringwald added.
“Some against the lockers. Some in a circle,” Nelson continued. “Some standing in a line. And some of them John [Hughes] was in with us. There was some cool shots that John was in with us.”

Looking at the legacy of the poster, there’s no arguing that they picked the right one. However, Annie Leibovitz is a superb photographer, and the Breakfast Club cast are great subjects, so I’m sure all the photographs were just as stunning. It would be great to see all the unused photos some day.
