John Hughes made a four-hour raw cut of The Breakfast Club, and the cast have seen it (but Emilio Estevez calls it “unreleaseable”)
There’s a longer version of John Hughes’s The Breakfast Club out there, and Judd Nelson says watching it feels like being in detention

Chicago's C2E2 2025 was three days of comics, community, celebrities, and pizza (Pequod's, if you want to know). Read our full recap of the weekend, watch all of the Main Stage panel videos, see all the best cosplay photos, and more. And if you want to do it all again next year, we've got the dates for C2E2 2026, too.
When John Hughes filmed The Breakfast Club, he encouraged his young cast members to adlib, play around with their scenes, and go with their feelings. As a result, his original cut of the film was over four hours long.
“It was a little bit daunting for our editor Dede Allen,” Molly Ringwald said during the Don’t You Forget About Me: The Breakfast Club 40th Anniversary Reunion panel at C2E2 2025. “To have that much film, it made her job a little challenging. I think she did an incredible job.”

Judd Nelson saw the unedited footage, and he didn’t hold back his thoughts.
“I believe Emilio and I saw an uncut compilation of all of Dede Allen’s footage. The whole film, everything we shot in sequence. No music, no color timing, no editing, just all slapped together. It was over four hours long. It was like being in detention. The movie ends, I’m sitting next to Emilio [Estevez], and he looks over to me and he goes, 'it’s unreleasable.'”
Luckily, Dede Allen was able to edit it down to something not just releasable, but iconic. Somewhere out there, this original cut ubdoubtedly still exists, but I don’t think anyone will be begging for a special DVD release anytime soon. (Really, please don't.)
