The Fantastic Four bring a brighter, cleaner costume look to the MCU in the first First Steps teaser

Harkening back to both the 1960s and 1980s comic book eras of the Fantastic Four, the First Steps team doesn't look just like the other MCU good guys

Perhaps the biggest reveal in the first trailer for Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps might be of the Fantastic Four themselves — which is to say, the team in their costumes. (You can get a good look above.)

Harkening back to the 1980s era of the characters with a costume redesign from then-comic book series writer and artist John Byrne (the white trim!), the costumes look more practical and less form-fitting than many a Marvel Studios hero — there’s arguably shades of the MCU Captain America costume in terms of them being more uniform than costume, per se.

The costumes are notably brighter than most other MCU costume, which befits the retro aesthetic of the movie, as well as the characters’ status as celebrities, and will also make the team stand out when the FF inevitably run into the rest of the MCU ahead of 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. (Note: officially, the FF haven’t been confirmed to appear in either movie just yet — we’re just speculating.)

If anything, the look of the team in the flesh (well, on the screen) splits the difference between the pastel aesthetic of the original 2024 painted preview image for the movie and the MCU as audiences know it right now… which is probably a good sign for everyone who wants to see the FF bring a different tone and feel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will fly into theaters July 25, 2024.
