This one arrives a little too late for spooky season, but that doesn’t mean it’s not some of the more surprising, exciting movie news of the year: 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment are working on a quasi-sequel to David Cronenberg’s 1980s horror classic The Fly, and they’ve brought in a particularly exciting filmmaker to do it.
Deadline is reporting that Nikyatu Jusu is attached to a project that is “set in the universe of Cronenberg’s film, rather than a straight remake,” according to unnamed sources quoted. Jusu is writing and directing, with Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping producing.
1986’s The Fly — adapted loosely from the George Langelaan short story of the same name from 1957, and the movie adaptation of the same a year later — was co-written and directed by Cronenberg, and is rightfully considered a landmark movie both in the body horror genre and Cronenberg’s career. Starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, The Fly is the story of Seth Brundle, a scientist whose experiments with teleportation technology go horrifically awry when he becomes spliced with fly DNA during an experiment. To say more would be to spoil the entire movie, which has to be seen to be believed.
A sequel was released in 1989, which was critically derided; it’s unclear if the new project will reference that movie in any way.
Jusu is an increasingly popular name in horror right now; following 2022’s Nanny, which she wrote and directed, she’s been attached to a forthcoming movie from Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions that expands on her short Suicide by Sunlight about Black vampires, as well as a sequel to Night of the Living Dead for MGM.
