If you didn’t grow up in the 90s, you might have missed out on seeing The Matrix on the big screen, which is a real shame. The ground-breaking sci-fi film featured some of the biggest and most impressive visual effects of the day and helped turn Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne into household names. If you’ve never seen The Matrix in cinemas before, Fathom Events is helping you fix that as the 25th anniversary of its original theatrical release.
That’s right – it’s been 25 years since the first movie in The Matrix franchise landed in cinemas and made us all question what was real and what could be a simulation. On September 19 and 22, we can all decide between the red pill and the blue pill all over again as part of a special screening from Fathom Events. Ahead of these special screenings, an anniversary piece with Jessica Henwick – one of the stars of The Matrix Resurrections – will play to help put the movie’s influence on pop culture into perspective.
Aside from popularizing the Bullet Time special effect used throughout the movie, The Matrix dug deep into philosophical questions of what is real and what could be a simulation. If something feels real to all your senses, how do you know if it isn’t, and, more importantly, does it even matter? The Matrix dared us all to question reality and probably try to bend a spoon with our minds when we thought no one was looking. Of course, the trick is to remember that there is no spoon in the first place.
The Matrix 25th Anniversary screenings are being run by Fathom Events. You can check your nearest screening and buy tickets now.
