Universal's Mummy reboot finds its anti-Tom Cruise with Midsommar's Jack Reynor

Irish actor Jack Reynor has quietly built himself a niche in horror these past few years, and now he makes his next move with The Mummy

If you don't know the name "Jack Reynor," it's probably time for that to change. Over the past decade, Reynor has been building a solid body of work, though you might remember him best as Christian (AKA the boyfriend who ends up becoming a bear, spoilers) in Midsommar. As Hollywood moves to embrace more and more talent from Ireland, it seems that Reynor is poised to make his next big break.

Deadline reports that Reynor has been cast in Lee Cronin's upcoming version of The Mummy, presenting another promising element of the film. Like Reynor, Cronin is Irish, and established his directing prowess with his take on changeling folklore in 2019's The Hole in the Ground. Given how the last Mummy film starred Tom Cruise of all people (don't get me wrong, I love me some Ethan Hunt, but the 2017 Mummy film was not it), it's good to see that Cronin's film is still shaping up to have some talent from indie films.

Outside of acting, Reynor wrote and directed a short in 2019 called Bainne, the Irish word for milk. Starring Will Poulter, the film was a horror short set during The Great Famine in Ireland. It was nominated at the Irish Film and Television Awards for Best Short Film. Currently, it can't be streamed anywhere online in the US, to which I'm going to implore someone (a company) to pick it up for distribution.

Until Cronin's Mummy film comes out, you can watch Reynor in films like Sing Street, Midsommar, Kin, Macbeth, and Glassland. The actor will also appear in John Carney's next film, Power Ballad, alongside Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, and Havana Rose Liu.
