Christopher Nolan is set for a long voyage ahead. Universal Pictures has released details about Nolan's upcoming film, an adaptation of Homer's Odyssey. While details are still scant about the project, we at least have a release date that we can look forward to.
The Odyssey will be released on July 17, 2026. Universal Pictures confirmed the film's release date on social media this week. In perfect Nolan fashion, the film will be shot "using brand new IMAX film technology," underscoring the filmmaker's commitment to the theatrical experience.
This is not the first time The Odyssey has been adapted to the big screen. The Coen Brothers notably adapted it (albeit with a modern interpretation set in 1937 Mississippi) with their seminal film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? starring George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson. The Coens also used elements of The Odyssey later on in their careers with Inside Llewyn Davis. In case you need your memory jogged, the orange tabby cat in that film was named Ulysses, and miraculously finds his way home back to New York City from Chicago.
Based on what we know from Universal, it seems that Nolan's version of The Odyssey will be a more traditional interpretation of the text. The studio described it as a "mythic action epic," which seems fit for Nolan's IMAX sensibilities. Either way, we'll likely know more details about the film in the coming months.
The Odyssey will release in theaters on July 17, 2026.
