Just like Elizabeth Sparkle, Coralie Fargeat's The Substance is making a comeback (ahead of Oscars season)
Demi Moore's performance in body horror The Substance earned her a Golden Globe. Ahead of the 2025 Oscars, distributor Mubi wants to remind you why

Look, I was never going to stop talking about The Substance, little horror freak that I am. But after Demi Moore took home her Golden Globe, it's a subject that comes up even more in my household, especially since I believe the more I talk about it, the more the Oscars gods will hear me. Now, distributor Mubi is making a similar offering to those same cinematic deities, as the film is headed back to theaters just as Oscars season approaches.
The news comes to us from the good folks at Bloody Disgusting, who report that The Substance will be returning to big screens across the US January 17. What's not in the report, unfortunately, is exactly which theaters the film will be returning to, though it does specify that some 350+ will be on that list. Check your local listings to see if there's a showing near you.
The Substance's triumphant return to cinemas is the latest in a series of wins for the stylized body horror. Not only has it propelled director Coralie Fargeat into the spotlight (though real ones already know her 2017 cult hit Revenge), it's also gotten a conversation going about the lack of horror films that become Oscar contenders, despite much-lauded directing and performances.
(Yes I'm talking about Toni Collette in Hereditary; I will never forgive the Academy.)
Whether or not The Substance's return to theaters will actually improve its Oscar chances, or if the powers-that-be will turn their noses up at the genre once again, is yet to be seen. But what we can guarantee is that, for a limited time, you can see The Substance exactly how it was intended: on the big screen, popcorn in hand, surrounded by friends you tricked by telling them this was Wicked.
The Substance is streaming on Mubi now, and back in theaters January 17.
