A short while ago, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and Blumhouse made some waves by posting a photograph of a title page of a script for King Spawn on their social media. Not only do we finally have a title for the long-awaited Spawn movie (which is credited to Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman & Scott Silver) and know that there is now an actual script, McFarlane has just given fans an update on what to expect soon.
At his panel at SDCC on Thursday, Todd McFarlane explained his big plan for the King Spawn movie – and it kind of hinges on the success of Deadpool and Wolverine. “That movie is gonna be giant,” McFarlane said about the upcoming Marvel Studios comedy, “It’s gonna open up giant, and it’s gonna be a giant, giant number.” He went on to say that the film would do so well that it would inspire “everybody in Hollywood” to pivot “and go ‘We need to do R Rated comic book fare.’”
As for the next step for King Spawn, McFarlane says, “We have to now go get a director. That will be the next step, very quickly… And once we got that director, hopefully we’ll tag him or her in the next month, two months, who knows? We can then finally go into Hollywood and say, ‘We’ve got it. It’s all here. Here’s the visual, here’s the audio. Here’s the team, and it’s go time. We don’t want you to make any comment, we want you to cut the check and get out of the way.’”
It has been a long road for the Spawn movie – ten years, as McFarlane has it. But, if things go as McFarlane would like them too, hopefully Hollywood will be calling soon. As McFarlane said in his panel, “The phone will start ringing literally from the studios next week, I promise you.”
