One of the biggest rules of horror cinema is that the less you show your monster, the better your movie will be. It is something that the team behind Universal’s Wolf Man has taken to heart – at least, as far as the trailer is concerned. The Wolf Man teaser trailer offers plenty of plot details and lots of setup, but, thankfully, only the barest glimpse of the monster. 

The trailer shows star Christopher Abbott (Poor Things) as Blake, who takes his family away from the relative safety of San Francisco for a visit to his childhood home in Oregon. The trailer shows the family being attacked by a strange creature and hints at the slow and dangerous transformation that occurs, turning Blake into the very thing he is trying to protect his family from.

We don’t mind that most of the plot is either revealed or hinted at in the trailer, but we are excited that we know very little about the design of the Wolf Man in question. In an age where trailers are almost legally obligated to show every single detail of a film, it is refreshing to approach Wolf Man without knowing exactly what the main character looks like. All we get is a few shadowy glimpses and a hairy arm bursting through a car windshield.

It might seem like a small detail but we’re thankful that Blumhouse is at least trying to take a less-is-more approach to the film. We will have to see how long it lasts as we get closer to the film’s January 17, 2025 release date.
